A Changing Paradigm: How Terrorists won their war against Western Freedom and Democracy

September 11, 2001 will never be forgotten. The day of the largest attack on democracy in modern times has been marked by that date. It is the collapse of the World Trade Centers that led to much of what is happening right now, but if one thing is for certain, the terrorists won.

The people responsible for 2001 had one ideal and one intention in mind, to destroy western democracy. With their attacks, western governments have grown to be more paranoid, more aggressive, more authoritarian and less democratic. Governments have boosted their emphasis on security and didn’t care if it hurt their own people. From the tight security at airports to border deals to new tough on crime legislation to America’s SOPA and Canada’s C-51, freedom and sense of mind have been taken from Canadians. It just so happens to be that by trying to secure a culture that is under attack, our governments have successfully put into place the steps to dismantling our culture – effectively doing the terrorists’ dirty work.

From 2001 on, Canada, the United States and Europe have been highly militarily engaged. From George Bush’s trillion dollar Iraq war to find no weapons of mass destruction to NATO’s ultimate failure in Afghanistan, terrorists led the west into their trap, into their death match to ensure that as we grew inevitably weaker that more harsh tactics would be used against us.

The United States, once a voice for freedom has become a glorified police state and Canada is beginning to join suit. It won’t be too long before Canadian phones are tapped, people are being monitored from the way they think to the way they spend to the way they communicate and the things they do in life and our government has found the perfect tool to use, the internet. America’s SOPA and Canada’s C-51 have one goal in mind and none other to extend the powers of their law into our lives and into our living rooms. It is to give police warrantless access to our daily affairs and routines, it is to actively censor the net such that their grip on power, propaganda and people become and remain unstoppable.

If we look to the terrorist regimes overseas, what we see is much of the same of what is to become North America: Paranoid and ruthless power hungry governments that abuse its authority and finances, censorship and oppression in places that were once the most free, a government knows all mentality that will try its best to control your every action or make you pay the consequences for not doing so.

Canada hasn’t completely arrived to this state yet, but C-51 is a firm step in that direction, as is Canada’s new military missions to impose upon other countries, as is the increasing tension between Canadian people that will ultimately lead to more protests and riots in the future. Let us not forget about how the G20 protests were handled, a tough arm of police officers given the power to whatever they wanted and they chose to attack their own people.

Canada is spending money on new prisons in a time of economic uncertainty and at a time when Canadians are facing the hardest financial times since the Great Depression and is passing failed Texan tough on crime policy as part of it's security package. The Conservatives have effectively instilled fear in their tactics in the US and these are creeping up to the Great White North, along with their failed policy, paranoid actions and authoritarian mentality.

With this, it is easy to see that North America, once a free land, is becoming more and more like the east and the ignorant sheep, while failing to realize the repercussions are walking into the trap. SOPA is set to pass in the United States, and C-51 will effectively be jammed through Canadian legislature in the coming months. It won’t be long before your every online action is recorded and it won’t be long before the government breaks your right to freedom and privacy and uses one of your online actions against you for whatever reason it feels like. Usually, wrong doing requires a warrant and Harper is granting police warrantless access. The police say it is no big deal to calm you down, but soon enough, the police state that Canada has become will use everything against you, just because it can.

If you take a deep hard look at the day’s events in North America, you will see staunch warning signs of upcoming fascism. Laws to inhibit your online privacy and freedoms are only the start. The abuses aren’t too hard to find, has anyone yet forgotten what happened at the G20 summit?
